The subject project is located on off of Normandy Boulevard next to the Jacksonville Equestrian Center in Jacksonville, Florida. This task order included performing a geotechnical exploration, laboratory testing program, and engineering analysis to assist the design team with support for the construction of the new Jacksonville Fairgrounds location. The site will consist of driveway/parking areas, multiple ponds, and an Expo Hall. We provided recommendations for Borrow Suitability of pond material, pavement support, and shallow foundations. To determine the subsurface conditions within the proposed turn lane areas, we located and performed 16 auger borings, drilled to depths of approximately 6 feet below the existing ground surface. The existing pavement layers (asphalt surface and underlying base course) for Normandy Boulevard and POW-MIA parkway were cored at four locations using a 4-inch diameter diamond coated core barrel connected to free standing mechanical drill equipment. Quantitative laboratory testing was performed on selected samples of the soils encountered during the field exploration to better define the composition of the soils encountered and to provide data for correlation to their anticipated strength and compressibility characteristics. Two bulk samples of the existing soils within the planned turn lane construction areas were collected for determination of the bearing value of the in-place soils.
